What is Small Wars?
Small Wars is a fast-paced skirmish wargame designed for historical and fantasy battles. It focuses on streamlined play, meaningful tactical choices, and flexible force building.
Do I need specific miniatures to play?
No. Small Wars is miniature-agnosticyou can use any miniatures you already own (plastic, metal, resin, or 3D printed), from any range or manufacturer.
What scale does Small Wars support?
The rules work across common miniature scales, including 28–32mm, 15mm, and others. Because the system is miniature-agnostic, you can play at the scale that suits your collection and table space.
How many miniatures do I need?
Most games work well with a small collection, typically a handful of units per side. You can start with a modest force and expand over time.
How long does a game take?
Games are designed to be quick to set up and play, making it suitable for weeknight sessions. Exact play time depends on table size and the number of units, but the system is built for fast resolution and smooth turns.
What do I get when I buy the rulebook?
You receive the Small Wars rulebook and everything you need to start building forces and playing. The rulebook includes rules, guidance for getting started, and tools to support play.
Is there an Army Builder?
Yes. Small Wars includes an Army Builder to help you build a contingent quickly, either by selecting Quick Start options or creating custom units that match your models.
Can I play historical and fantasy in the same game?
Yes. The system is built to support both historical and fantasy forces. If you want, you can keep your games theme-pure, or mix styles for narrative or casual play.
Is this a “tournament” ruleset or a narrative ruleset?
It is designed to support both: clear, structured rules for balanced play, plus enough flexibility for narrative scenarios and creative army themes.
Do I need special dice or templates?
You’ll only need standard tabletop items a set of polyhedral dice (DND Dice) or any free dice app and measuring tools. The system is designed to avoid unnecessary complexity or specialist components.
Is Small Wars beginner friendly?
Yes. The rules are written to help new players get onto the table quickly, while still offering depth for experienced hobbyists.
Can I play with 3D printed miniatures?
Absolutely. Small Wars is a great fit for 3D printing, print what you like, base it, and build a force using the Army Builder.
Is the rulebook available in print?
At this stage, the rulebook is available as a digital PDF. Print options may be offered in future releases.
Can I share the PDF with friends?
Purchases are intended for personal use. If your group needs multiple copies, the best way to support the game is for each player to purchase their own copy.
